Historic York -
Vikings to Victorians
York has a long and fascinating history. It begins with the Romans who built a fortress in AD71, later it was invaded by the Angles and Vikings leaving a fascinating legacy for us to explore today.
York was also one of the most important of medieval cities and many of the buildings from that period can still be seen. The medieval Minster, the biggest of its kind in Northern Europe , is a site not to be missed and on this weekend we will make time to thoroughly explore it.
The city walls are of thirteenth and fourteenth century date and surround the historic core of the city. As part of our exploration of this fascinating city we will take a walk along the walls. York is a bustling lively historic city and walking through the ‘Shambles' is an experience in itself. There are many interesting shops to also investigate!
And of course we mustn't forget the city's rich Georgian and Victorian heritage. Our visit to York Castle Museum will reveal much of this aspect of York 's past.
