Off the Beaten track in Northamptonshire

On Saturday morning we will visit the ancient borough and market town of Higham Ferrers, part of the Duchy of Lancaster, with its beautiful medieval church, the bedehouse, school and college founded by Henry Chichele, a noted 15th century Archbishop of Canterbury. (See Current Archaeology magazine issue 235, for more info on Higham Ferrers) Another local person of note was the author H. E. Bates who was born in Rushden which adjoins Higham.  After a pub lunch in a 17th century hostelry we will go on to nearby Boughton House, home of the Duke of Buccleuch. We will have a guided tour of the stunning interior of this magnificent house (“the English Versailles”) with its treasures of porcelain, paintings, furniture and armour.
On Sunday we will have a private conducted visit to the noted Roman villa at Piddington and see the award-winning museum which has been lovingly and expertly built up by local effort.  During the afternoon we will travel in the SW of the county to visit Sulgrave Manor to learn of the county’s strong American connections, especially here at the home of George Washington’s family. As with all his courses Malcolm will give loads of additional information and anecdotes, and we will find ourselves looking at far more than the course seems to offer.
