Behind the Scenes at
Lincoln Cathedral
Lincoln Cathedral is one of the finest Cathedrals in Europe. Founded in 1092 by Bishop Remigius it still towers over the city and the surrounding countryside. The cathedral today is more than just its past glories it is a vibrant community encompassing both work and worship.
This extra-special mid-week break takes a behind the scenes look at many aspects of the cathedral. We will visit the stonemasons’ yard – not normally open to the public – to see how new stone is carved and repairs are made.
We will also visit the Wren Library and the medieval library; which together form one of the finest rare book collections in the East Midlands. Later we will climb high above the cathedral floor to explore the extraordinary medieval timber structure of the roof. A further aspect of this tour will include the bell ringing chamber and tower.
Lincoln is one of only a few Cathedrals in England to have its own permanent workforce dedicated to the conservation of the building. Apart from the stonemasons the cathedral employs many other specialists including stained-glass workers whose craft we will see.
