Heritage Events in Lincolnshire

LINCOLNSHIRE HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

September 9th to 12th 2010

Heritage Open Days 2009 was a great success, attracting over 15,000 visitors .The theme for 2010 will be Lincolnshire at War - through the ages and we are looking to fill around half of the programme with events reflecting that theme. Events can range from special activities at RAF museums, to re-enactments of English Civil War battles to guided tours of our medieval castle sites.

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th September - 1940s Weekend
The Lincolnshire Wolds Railway in conjunction with the villages of North Thoresby and Fulstow invite you to take a nostalgic step back in time and experience the 1940's in a spectacular two-day community event. Battle of Britain Hurricane fighter pilot Squadron Leader Douglas Nicholls DFC will formally open the event at 10.30 am on the Saturday at Ludborough.

JulianJulian Richards
Julian is probably best known as the presenter of TV's Meet the Ancestors and Blood of the Vikings. An archaeologist and historian he has a great curiosity about all periods, about the places, the buildings and the objects, but most of all about the people. He says: "The past surrounds us all, it is part of our everyday lives whether we are aware of it or not and my ‘mission’ is to bring this past to life, to tease out the fascinating stories that it has to tell." 

MickeyMickey Burke
Mickey is a keen researcher of Lincolnshire’s wartime aviation past. He has boundless enthusiasm for the history of the Lancaster bomber and the men who flew in it. A national newspaper journalist of 30 years standing, he has also written articles on WW2 history and the aftermath of the Cold War.

MalcolmMalcolm Deacon
Malcolm is very well known in Northamptonshire for having expert knowledge of the county. Being a retired minister gives Malcolm a unique insight into much of the county’s history. When not working as tour guide Malcolm is busy lecturing and publishing historical books.

JeanJean Howard
Jean has worked as both curator and researcher and has also published widely on many aspects of Lincolnshire history. She expertly combines her knowledge of history and architecture with human interest stories. This makes her a wonderful and ever enthusiastic tutor and guide.

JillJill Collinge
Jill  has had considerable experience in the media both in local and national radio, TV and the press. She has been a Blue Badge guide since 1984 and has an extensive knowledge of the area from a historic, social and architectural perspective.

HarveyHarvey Sheldon
Harvey is a Senior lecturer in archaeology at Birkbeck College, University of London. He has been involved in the archaeology of London for over four decades, directing major excavations. He is an acknowledged expert on the archaeology of Roman Britain.

JennyJenny Denton
Jenny has been a Blue Badge Guide for twenty years working mainly in the North of England.  She has a great love for the people and places in her adopted county of Yorkshire with a particular interest in its historical heritage and rich diversity of churches and religious buildings. 

DavidDavid Stowell
David is a qualified Blue Badge Tour Guide with a comprehensive knowledge of the region, its history and its varied and interesting buildings.  His particular expertise and enthusiasm for the Wye Valley comes from living in Herefordshire and the surrounding counties for many years. After a busy career in industry he now delights in guiding people around the sights of the countryside he loves.

JimJim Page
Jim has been a Chartered Civil Engineer for over 60 years and a Chartered Town Planner since 1954. His lifetime interest in the study of the history of towns started at school in Gainsborough. His career in town planning started in 1942 holding a variety of posts in Local Government. Since early retirement in 1983 he regularly leads study tours of historic towns.

CazCaz Mamwell
Caz is a freelance archaeologist who has excavated widely in the UK and abroad. Now settled in Orkney, and a qualified Orkney tourist guide, she spends the summers introducing visitors to Orkney’s amazing archaeology, history and cultural traditions, and the winters working on her PhD.
