LINCOLNSHIRE HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

September 9th to 12th 2010

Heritage Open Days 2009 was a great success, attracting over 15,000 visitors .The theme for 2010 will be Lincolnshire at War - through the ages and we are looking to fill around half of the programme with events reflecting that theme. Events can range from special activities at RAF museums, to re-enactments of English Civil War battles to guided tours of our medieval castle sites.

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th September - 1940s Weekend
The Lincolnshire Wolds Railway in conjunction with the villages of North Thoresby and Fulstow invite you to take a nostalgic step back in time and experience the 1940's in a spectacular two-day community event. Battle of Britain Hurricane fighter pilot Squadron Leader Douglas Nicholls DFC will formally open the event at 10.30 am on the Saturday at Ludborough.

TV archaeologist Julian Richards will give us a private tour of Stonehenge

Renowned TV archaeologist Julian Richards takes us on our own private visit to Stonehenge as well as his favourite sites including Woodhenge and Durrington Walls where we will discuss the results of the recent excavations which have produced startling new discoveries. We will walk the length of the Stonehenge Cursus, a great ceremonial Neolithic enclosure that predates Stonehenge.

From the King Barrow Ridge, with its spectacular Bronze Age burial mounds, some excavated, some untouched, we walk to Stonehenge along the line of its Avenue. We also visit the barrow cemetery at Winterbourne Stoke that contains every known type of southern British round barrow. Finally we have our special visit to Stonehenge for the rare privilege of walking amongst the stones -a wonderful way to end the day.

On day three we will continue our prehistoric investigations by exploring the Avebury area including WestKennetlong Barrow and SilburyHill,all under the guidance of Julian.

Itinerary: Day 1: Evening Wine reception, evening dinner and illustrated talk on prehistoric Wessex by Julian Richards. Day 2: Visits guided by Julian Richards Private visit to Stonehenge. Day 3: Visit to Avebury area sites guided by Julian Richards. Optional Day 4: Optional tour of Salisbury including the cathedral and museum.

Cost : £450 per person for 3 nights DB&B (based on 2 sharing a twin/double room). Single supplement £15 per night. Extra Night: £50 per person. Only want to stay two nights? Deduct £50 per person.  Day 4 Tour: £45 per person - includes transport to Salisbury personal guide around Salisbury, entrance to museum & cathedral and mid morning tea/coffee at a cafe. Please note that some walking is involved in this tour.
