Roman London and Verulamium with Harvey Sheldon: June 11-13
DATE: 11– 13 June 2010.
A very successful tour now completed. The good weather made this an extra special experience. Look forward to tour photo's coming soon.
This exclusive tour tapped into the extensive knowledge of our guide, Harvey Sheldon, an experienced archaeologist and Roman historian. On our first full day Harvey took us on a tour the City of London and Southwark, looking at the evidence for Roman Londinium, beginning with the city wall at the Barbican in the north-west and ending with other imposing sections of the defences on Tower Hill in the south-east.
We visited the Museum of London’s Roman gallery and the recently found amphitheatre beneath the Guildhall, as well as Grimes famous post war discoveries, the Cripplegate fort and the temple of Mithras. The day included a topographic walk, covering both banks of the Thames, introducing many of the sites where important features of Roman London have been discovered through archaeological research.
On Sunday we journeyed some 20 miles north-west of Londinium to visit Verulamium, the nearest Roman city, in contrast to London now mainly parkland. Here we again examined the ancient topography and sites dug by Wheeler, Frere and Kenyon, including the Roman theatre and the remains of ‘town houses’ finishing with a visit to the Verulamium museum, with its impressive collection of mosaics and artefacts. We were also had a bonus of a roman legionary in full uniform telling us all about Roman life and combat!
Both days included substantial amounts of walking.
