Beverley
Beautiful Beverley Minster

DATE: 23 – 25 July 2010.

“Awesome!” was the only way of describing the churches we visited on this tour. We visited Beverley Minster, one of the most beautiful churches in England at the end of the first day and had a fascinating tour of the minster. We also visited stunning churches revered for their architecture or for their unique historical features. We saw so many interesting churches over this weekend that we cannot do them justice in just a few lines but here are some highlights (Tour pictures on website now):

Selby Abbey – this abbey, founded by William the Conqueror for Benedictine monks, has a Norman Transitional nave comparable with Durham, while its Decorated chancel is one of the loveliest in northern England. Howden – is a large cruciform monastic church with a central tower  complete with a roofless ruined chapter house. Patrington – St Patrick’s is an architectural gem being almost all of one period, the Decorated. The windows are full of reticulated tracery. Both transepts are double- aisled, a very rare feature. Hedon – is rugged with a Perpendicular tower and an Early English chancel and transepts. Particularly interesting is the beautiful North transept. The interior has been much altered over the centuries, but contains a Gothic gem, the font.
